DT Philly Updates
Here at DT Philly we are thankful for the wonderful architects, designers, and engineers who are volunteering their time to mentor our school design teams. Last week we were visiting the Lincoln team when they first connected with their mentor and learned about some of the incredible projects (like the Orion spacecraft) he works on, and we had the opportunity recently to introduce the...Read More
As students on the Motivation High School design team discussed their project research plan, the conversation touched upon the challenging topic of how to encourage and sustain behavior change as well as the effects of negative consequences and positive incentives. "The problem is you try to run up the whole staircase at once and you end up dropping it," said one student, explaining why so...Read More
A lively discussion took place at KCAPA this week as members of the design team grappled with questions of project scope as well as what is feasible and desirable. According to our friend Joe, a sustainable design practitioner who helped us with a DT project this summer, it's a good sign if you're arguing because you know you're making progress. By the end of the day, the team had identified...Read More
In a school that's merging, there are lots of challenges that could become the focus of a DT Philly project. The Smarticle Particles (sometimes known as Team Team) from Kensington International Business High School were in the midst of a lively conversation when we were joined by a surprise guest--Principal Lajara--who graciously took the time to field some questions from the students. As we...Read More
We had fun visiting the Tilden Tigers last week and watching design thinking videos with them. (Don’t forget you can access clickable links to these short DT videos by visiting the “Resource” section under your “My Account” page after you log in to the website.) We also had a chance to catch up with the Tilden Design Team (TDT) and were impressed with their energy and enthusiasm as they...Read More
There's no one way to do things DT Philly style. The Problem Solvers design team at Longstreth shared their process with us this week, and it includes keeping in touch and discussing individual and group work through the Kik messaging app. They were even "kik"ing things around at 6:30 in the morning one day this week! We also like the way they're sketching ideas as they go and empathizing...Read More
As part of their project start-up, the King Dynasty design team invited us for a visit to share what they're working on, ask us questions about DT Philly, and get a website tutorial. If you haven't scheduled a visit yet, don't forget to call or email to set that up. King Dynasty impressed us with their curiosity, enthusiasm, and teamwork, and we look forward to seeing what they choose for...Read More
We had fun yesterday visiting the talented team at Southwark and learning from them as they began crafting "how might we" statements around their possible design challenges. A lot of consideration went into their work as they revisited the issues and revised their early takes on their design problem statements. We agree with this student's assessment of the day: "We did lots of thinking!"...
